How Inert Fire Suppression System Works
With the big push toward “Green”, Fire Projects recommend inert gasses which have become a good choice as they are the most green of all of the Clean Agents. Inert gasses are defined as using one or more of the gasses Nitrogen, argon, or helium. CO2 is also found in one of the inert gas blends.
Inert gasses work by removing the oxygen in the hazard to a point where it will not support a fire, but still high enough to support life. Design considerations when using inert gasses are pressure venting and volume. It is critical to design the system to achieve the correct concentration, and not remove too much oxygen in the room. Plus, venting of inert gasses is important as it displaces the air volume in the hazard area. Fire Projects can assist in determining which agent is best suited to protect the hazard area (includes detection and control for the system).
Inert Gas Fire Suppression systems are commonly found with the following blends and names:-
1) Inergen fire suppression – IG541:
Inergen fire suppression agent is made up of 50% Argon, 42% Nitrogen and 8% Co2. The Co2 in this blend helps us absorbe oxygen into our blood cells. By doing this it decreases the risk of the symptoms described above. Co2 is also known to increase our heart beat rate and also induce hyper ventilation. This gas clearly suggests an advantage over the other inert gas fire suppression systems, but there is a down side to this.
If the protected space is filled with toxic bi-products of combustion, the hyper ventilating will introduce more toxins and increase the risk of other side effects.
Argon/nitrogen fire suppression – Commonly known as IG55 fire suppression:
IG55 fire suppression is a balanced mix of 50% Argon & 50% Nitrogen. The fire suppression agent provides good buoyancy, which keeps it in the protected space for longer, thus optimizing the suppression period.
